Drugs Sermon - Pastor Steve Winter

This is the study that I used for my sermon tonight 2/24/2001 on
the subject of drugs. It is available in RealAudio format at
http://www.onenessapostolic.org/audio

1 Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and
stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected
the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are
these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath,
strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of
the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past,
that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

The word "witchcraft" in verse 20 above translates from pharmakeia
which has obvious roots also in the word pharmacy. The use of
drugs in witchcraft is not "news". Drug abuse is scripturally
related to witchcraft.

5331 pharmakeia {far-mak-i'-ah}
from 5332;; n f
AV - sorcery 2, witchcraft 1; 3
1) the use or the administering of drugs
2) poisoning
3) sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry
and fostered by it
4) metaph. the deceptions and seductions of idolatry

We also see in the Word of God that there are positive referrences
to medicine. The laws of our land as well while being strong against
drug abuse have respect for medical use of drugs.

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a
broken spirit drieth the bones.

Ezekiel 47:12 And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side
and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not
fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring
forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they
issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat,
and the leaf thereof for medicine.

Matthew 9:12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They
that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

If Jesus Himself recommended using a physician when sick, then
we can hardly preach against medicine.

Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are
whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came
not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Jesus even used the analogy of a physician to speak of Himself.

Luke 5:31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are
whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

Colossians 4:14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you.

Luke was a physician and the Bible does not say that he quit
practicing medicine to serve God.

Revelation 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side
of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of
fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the
tree were for the healing of the nations.

2 Kings 20:5 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people,
Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy
prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third
day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.
6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver
thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will
defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
7 And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on
the boil, and he recovered.

Another drug abuse issue is drinking of alcohol.

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and
whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Proverbs 31:4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to
drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

Isaiah 5:22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of
strength to mingle strong drink:

Galatians 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

You cannot be "too temperate". I believe that there is strong
scriptural support for a Christian to abstain totally from any drug
use or alcoholic drinks except in a medical situation. Things like
vitamins and herbal things that are good for the body do not fall
into those categories.

There are some herbs that are in a sense poisons or drugs that also
are to be avoided. Just because it grows does not mean it is good.
Man did bring a curse on this world when he brought sin in.

2 Peter 1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience;
and to patience godliness;
