Other Tongues Sermon - Pastor Steve Winter

This is my text that I used for tonight's 7/01/2004 sermon
It should be available in audio format at

I am involved with debating a lot of false-christian devils on USENET and various places. One of the fouler devils claims to have obeyed Acts 2:38 which would be a good thing, right? It would be good if he was telling the truth, but he is lying. He claims that he has the Holy Ghost, but when it comes to speaking in other tongues he denies it. He is simply a liar.

You could hardly call a church in the city and ask them if they obeyed any Bible verse and get an honest no answer. Think about it. You call some cult and ask do you obey Acts 2:38 and they would say, "Oh no we don't obey that". Don't hold your breath... Only by asking some questions can we find out if they really are an Acts 2:38 Church. If the preacher or person answering the phone doesn't know what it is, that is not a good sign.

It is the business and calling of the ministers of Satan to pretend to be Christian ministers.

2 Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

So if we are going to discover the ministers of Satan then we are going to have to know where to look, and that is among the ranks of men calling themselves "Christian minister" or "Christian teacher".

Anyway, the deceiver that I was debating with was claiming to have the Holy Ghost even though he fights against the doctrine of other tongues as the initial evidence of the Holy Ghost baptism. One of the verses he uses to deceive people is:

1 Corinthians 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

Now that verse is clear that the quoted verse from the Word of God that not all speak with tongues, BUT the type of tongues that Paul was addressing is the "Gift of Tongues", not the "Pentecost tongues" or "other tongues".

What? Am I now saying that there are two completely different types of speaking in tongues? Yes! I believe I can prove it from the scriptures and it is so easy a child could understand it. One type of tongues CAN be understood by men if they happen to speak that language. The other CANNOT be understood by any man and requires a second spiritual gift called "interpretation of tongues".

IT IS ESSENTIAL to understand that there are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT KINDS OF TONGUES in the Bible. #1: Other Tongues and #2: The Gift of Tongues (Unknown tongues).

When the 120 in the upper room were filled with the Holy Ghost they spoke in other tongues(#1).

Acts 1:15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

Other tongues(#1) WAS UNDERSTOOD by men

Acts 2:5 ¶ And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

Acts 2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

In I Cor 14:2 however it says that when a man speaks in "unknown tongues (#2)" that NO MAN UNDERSTANDS him.

1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

In I Cor 12: 29,30 Paul is speaking concerning "the Gift of Tongues( unknown tongues #2)" when he asks "Do all speak with tongues(#2)?", the group that he was addressing all had spoken in "other tongues(#1)" when they had received the Holy Ghost.

1 Corinthians 12:29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Notice in the above verse 9 where Paul is talking about the "Gift of faith" and saying that not all Christians will have it. We don't have the false-christians claiming to be "saved" without faith, though. Faith most certainly is required

for salvation but Paul is talking about the "Gift of Faith", not saving Faith! Just like Paul is talking about the "Gift of Tongues" and not "salvation tongues" AKA "other tongues". Think about that! All Christians have faith but not all Christians have the "Gift of Faith".

Though ALL that receive the Holy Ghost DO SPEAK IN OTHER TONGUES(#1). Of these not everyone will be used in the "Gift of Tongues(#2)". Every new-testament Christian will speak in "other tongues(#1)", but every Christian will not be used in the "Gift of tongues(#2)"

Other tongues(#1) is, however, only the initial evidence that a person has been "reborn of the Spirit". It is not an end unto itself, but rather the beginning of a Christian life that should go "on to perfection" and manifest the full "fruit of the Spirit" in due season. Also essential is repentance from sin and baptism in water in the NAME of Jesus.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Everyone in the new testament (including Mary the mother of Jesus) spoke in "other tongues(#1)" when they received the Holy Ghost.

Acts 1:12 ¶ Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.

13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
15 ¶ And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

So we see that Mary, the mother of Jesus was among the 120 in the Upper Room. Then we see that they were ALL filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues.

Acts 2:1 ¶ And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Remember that the only way that the Apostles knew that Gentiles had received the same Holy Ghost that they had was because they heard them speak in tongues.

Acts 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

Acts 2:1 ¶ And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Those who don't believe in Jesus Name water baptism and speaking in other tongues don't really believe the Bible at all and are not a part of the religion of the Bible. But don't expect ministers of Satan to admit that they are ministers of Satan or in many cases to even realize that they are actually serving the devil.

It does not excuse a false preacher because he is deceived!

2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

Those who have not received the Holy Ghost speaking in tongues need to quit their lying and claiming to have the Holy Ghost baptism and start seeking God for real Biblical salvation!

The devils that I am debating on USENET can't admit the truth because of their pride. They can't admit that they are not even Christians when they have been playing "christian" for so long! They certainly won't be the first load to hit hell because of their pride. Don't go with them. It's just not a smart thing to do.
